The engagement ring industry has a tradition of making everything feel more complicated than it needs to be. Confusing grading scales. Inflated "rules" about how much to spend. Pressure from every direction.
Here's a simpler approach.
Step 1: Set a Budget You're Comfortable With
Forget the "three months' salary" rule. It was invented by a diamond mining company in the 1930s to sell more expensive stones.
Set a budget that feels right for your financial situation. With lab-grown diamonds costing 60-80% less than mined, your budget goes significantly further. A $3,000 budget that might get you a 0.5ct mined diamond can get you a 1.5ct lab-grown stone of the same quality.
Step 2: Choose a Diamond Shape
This is the most personal decision. Popular shapes and what they communicate:
- Round Brilliant — The classic. Maximum sparkle and fire. Universally flattering.
- Oval — Elegant and elongating. The most popular shape of the past 5 years.
- Emerald — Sophisticated and architectural. Step-cut facets create a hall-of-mirrors effect.
- Princess — Modern and geometric. A square shape with brilliant-cut facets.
- Pear — Unique and dramatic. Teardrop shape that elongates the finger.
- Cushion — Romantic and soft. Rounded corners with brilliant facets.
- Marquise — Bold and distinctive. The largest face-up area per carat of any shape.
If you're unsure, start with what catches your eye. There's no wrong answer.
Step 3: Understand the 4Cs (But Don't Overthink Them)
Cut is the most important factor. It determines how much a diamond sparkles. Prioritize Excellent or Very Good cut grades.
Color in the D-G range looks colorless to the naked eye. You won't notice the difference between a D and an F without magnification.
Clarity in the VS1-VS2 range means inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. There's no practical reason to pay for Internally Flawless unless you want it for personal reasons.
Carat is personal preference. Remember: cut quality matters more for visual impact than carat weight. A well-cut 1ct diamond will outshine a poorly-cut 1.5ct.
Step 4: Pick Your Metal
- 14K White Gold — Bright white, durable, most affordable. Great all-around choice.
- 18K White Gold — Slightly warmer tone, higher gold content. Premium feel.
- 14K Yellow Gold — Warm, classic, currently trending. Pairs beautifully with all diamond shapes.
- 14K Rose Gold — Romantic, distinctive. The copper alloy creates a unique warmth.
- Platinum — The most durable option. Hypoallergenic. Naturally white (no re-plating needed).
Step 5: Get the Size Right
Check our Ring Size Guide for at-home measuring methods. If buying as a surprise, borrow one of their rings from the correct finger, or ask a friend or family member to help.
Most PAIJE rings can be resized within 1-2 sizes after purchase.
