The Complete Guide

Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds

Same diamond. Different origin. Here's what the science says.

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. It's created in a controlled environment using CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) technology instead of being extracted from the earth.

Lab-grown diamonds are composed of pure crystallized carbon with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), refractive index (2.42), and thermal conductivity as mined diamonds. Even expert gemologists cannot distinguish between them without specialized equipment. They are not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Lab-Grown vs Mined: The Facts

A side-by-side comparison across every metric that matters.

Chemical Composition

Lab-Grown: Pure crystallized carbon (C)
Mined: Pure crystallized carbon (C)
Verdict: Identical. Both are real diamonds at the atomic level.

Hardness (Mohs Scale)

Lab-Grown: 10
Mined: 10
Verdict: Identical. Both are the hardest natural material known to science.

Refractive Index

Lab-Grown: 2.42
Mined: 2.42
Verdict: Identical. Same fire, brilliance, and light performance.

Thermal Conductivity

Lab-Grown: Identical
Mined: Identical
Verdict: Both pass diamond testers. This is why they can't be distinguished by standard tools.

Certification

Lab-Grown: IGI / GCAL certified
Mined: GIA / IGI certified
Verdict: Both graded on the same 4Cs scale by the same major laboratories.

Average Price (1ct, VS1, F color)

Lab-Grown: $1,500–$2,500
Mined: $8,000–$12,000
Verdict: Lab-grown costs 60-80% less. The savings come from eliminating mining infrastructure — not from inferior quality.

Environmental Impact

Lab-Grown: Minimal — no excavation, ~18 gallons water/ct
Mined: 250+ tons of earth per carat, ~126 gallons water/ct, 57kg CO2/ct
Verdict: Lab-grown has a dramatically smaller environmental footprint.

Supply Chain Transparency

Lab-Grown: Fully traceable from seed to setting
Mined: Often opaque, multiple intermediaries
Verdict: Lab-grown offers complete provenance. You know exactly where your diamond was made.

Time to Create

Lab-Grown: 2–4 weeks
Mined: 1–3 billion years
Verdict: Lab-grown diamonds are created using the same extreme heat and pressure — just accelerated by modern technology.

CVD vs HPHT: How Diamonds Are Grown

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) grows diamonds from a carbon gas seed in a vacuum chamber at around 800°C. A microwave beam breaks down methane gas, and carbon atoms deposit layer by layer onto a diamond seed. CVD is the most common method today because it offers superior control over quality and allows for larger, higher-clarity stones.

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) replicates the natural conditions of diamond formation — extreme pressure (5-6 GPa) and heat (1,300-1,600°C). A small diamond seed is placed in carbon material and subjected to these conditions using a press.

Both produce real diamonds. PAIJE primarily uses CVD-grown stones for their consistency and quality, though select pieces feature HPHT diamonds.

Diamond Education

Understanding the 4Cs

The universal grading system for diamond quality — applied identically to lab-grown and mined diamonds.

Carat

Carat measures a diamond's weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but carat alone doesn't determine beauty — cut quality matters more for brilliance.

Cut

Cut determines how well a diamond reflects light. An Excellent cut maximizes fire and brilliance. This is the single most important factor in a diamond's visual beauty. PAIJE prioritizes Excellent and Very Good cuts.

Color

Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). PAIJE offers stones in the D-J range for traditional diamonds, plus certified fancy colors including champagne, honey, and pink.

Clarity

Clarity measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes. PAIJE diamonds range from IF (Internally Flawless) to VS2 (Very Slightly Included). Most inclusions in this range are invisible to the naked eye.
